Great Black-backed Gull, juvenile: Paglesham Lagoon, Essex - 3rd September 2005
Note the heavy bill with blunt tip and prominent Gonydeal angle. The overall impression is of a rather cold/frosty looking bird., ground colour is whitish. The wing coverts are whitish with well spaced dark barring and tghe dark based tertials have large white tips. The scapulars are brown centred with neat whitish fringes and creamy-buff bases, still fully juvenile.
The primaries are short and the legs are pink.

The greater coverts are mostly pale whitish with well spaced dark brown barring. The median and lesser coverts are also mostly whitish but have more prominent dark bars. The tertials are dark brown based with large white tips. This bird has already replaced a few of its scapulars.
