Kumlien's Gull - Larus glaucoides kumlieni
Third-years

3rd winter - Clifden, Galway 23rd February 2009.
Ages as a third-winter due to pale eye, pale grey scapulars, replaced median coverts, inner greater coverts and a central tertial. The bill is pale with dark tip.

Note the rather strong brown mottling to the neck and streaking to the head. The wing coverts show diffuse wing pattern whilst the ID feature, the primaries show a distinct brownish wash though the angle of the bird would often make it difficult to make out. This feature feature is better seen in the flight shot.
