Laughing Gull - Larus atricilla
Second-years
Note the patchy hood of this second-year bird, the completely dark grey upper-parts, dark legs and all black primaries lacking any mirrors
Hood is beginning to develop, not the patchy forehead. There are a few brown tinged wing coverts otherwise the plumage is uniformly dark grey. The primaries are all black with no mirrors or white tips. Dark marks are also visible in the tail. The bills is long, slender and dark with slightly a reddish tone and a distinct droop tip.
Same bird above and below: bird is close to being adult however note the second-year plumage characters; dark marks to the tail and the primary coverts. This bird was at Dungeness in November 2005 and was part of a major influx to the UK at the time.
Note also the strongly contrasting broad white trailing edge, the all black primaries (lacking white tips) and long wings.
