Yellow-legged Gull, adult, Hole Haven Creek, Essex - 22nd January 2008
Yellow-legged Gull, juvenile, Paglesham Lagoon, Essex - 8th September 2008

Glaucous Gull, 1st winter, Paglesham Lagoon, Essex - 4th February 2008
This rather large Glaucous Gull was found the preceding weekend by Don Petrie. It was reported here again by subsequent birders and then relocated by myself on Barling Tip a week or so later and then by me again at Hole Haven Creek towards the end of the month.

A cracking juvenile/1st winter Glaucous Gull was a regular feature of the visits to Hole Haven Creek during February being seen on all but one visit. From careful scrutiny of the plumage it is quite possible that these are different birds. However as the images are about 2 weeks apart, taken in different light conditions and at markedly different ranges it is likely it is one and the same bird though the earlier picture seems to indicate it was more advance in replacing scapular feathers than the image below 2 weeks later. If they are different birds then 3 Glaucous Gulls, plus 2 Iceland Gulls were present at the creek this winter.

This stunning adult Iceland Gull was a one day wonder on 27th February  2008 and was perhaps the highlight of the winter gull season at the creek.
