Red-billed Gull - Larus novaehollandiae
First-years
The common gull of New Zealand and Australia where often encountered in large numbers on the coast, less commonly found inland. In Australia it is known as Silver Gull.
Aged as a first-year due to the brown primaries and secondaries, which are exposed by missing greater coverts. The eye is slightly darker than that on adult birds and the bill has a slightly darkish tip. All of the wing coverts are of the grey adult type rather than barred brown.
